This story is a perfect example of the type of local coverage that has typically disappeared in the digital age and the era of media consolidation. Thank you Mr. Leighton for providing a new level of neutral, informative editorial coverage for the residents of Beverly.
Speaking as a Former City Councilor of that ward that is impacted. There are many sites in Beverly that were never truly remediated after years of being "dump" sites. Beverly has a great deal to do with research during the time periods of WWII and up to present day, across the street from that site the Bomac/Varian property still to this day haunts neighbors due to that clean up situation. Even though Beverly contributed a great deal to the war efforts, they were never proplerly dealt with.
Sounds like Federally there should have been and there should be more responsibility to deal with/ clean up the after waste of the weapons created by the DOD.
Paul, you may recall from attending the very contentious meetings North Beverly and Montserrat Neighborhood Groups held regarding building on this land, it was repeatedly brought to everyone's attention that the land was not stable and anything built there would sink eventually.
I’m wondering if the Beverly building commissioner will declare it unsafe. With this pending litigation, WFM does not need customer lawsuits too. I know that I wouldn’t feel safe shopping there now that this has all been disclosed. And also, I wonder why it has not been reported in the Salem News??
So what they're saying is that the Beverly store alone makes a million bucks a week in PROFIT!.. Nice. According to the lawsuit of course... If that's the case, there's a lot of room in their pricing.

That's probably gross profit, before overhead, since for a temporary/short term closure most of the overhead would still need to be paid.
This is why they didn’t wanna build the road on that site. Because they knew it would sink into the ground.
