Pretty frustrating that this preemption question has been posed to the state for 2 1/2 years and there’s still no answer. Those hanging lights confuse drivers. Not sure why they were even installed before the state weighed in.
Not only have, I wondered concerning the traffic lights of which you write
But what’s up with the traffic lights at the junction point of railroad Avenue and the closed Ryle side bridge? Where the closed Bowl O Mat locale is and Salem Plumbing locale?
Was there not enough room for a rotary? We have them by Whole Foods and the 128 onramp on rt 22. A more elegant solution than the traffic lights in my opinion, everyone keeps moving and it doesn't require a light.
“Cahill said the city doesn’t think preemption is needed because the lights are far enough from the railroad crossings”. WOW. Mike. I was at the meetings. I asked the direct questions. YOU told me the system was how the intersection was going to be made safe from buses and cars backing onto the tracks but now it’s not needed? Were you just lying to me the whole time? This city sucks.
Great question to address, Paul; it's been on many people's minds ever since they were "installed". The lights are sorely needed to coordinate traffic through this busy and unusually configured intersection.
Thank you Paul, I guess I wasn't the only one wondering 😅. Great job as usual 👏

It will be most helpful either way, if drivers are reminded to NEVER Stop on RR tracks.
Even if it looks like traffic is moving, anything can happen - stalled car, pedestrian, fender bender or traffic light.
Wait until you know there is space for your car beyond the track.
How many people don't practice that, esp.at Montserrat?

There wasn’t. They wanted to but would’ve had to take land from homeowners.

Thank you, Paul. Very well done, as always.
Timely article, Paul- my friend and I were talking about this just last night when we were crossing Essex Street at Corning. Thank you for the update.
Mike "not my fault" Cahill

I've been wondering what they were waiting for. Thanks for looking into it!
