It was about 9 a.m. on April 18 when Jack Terrill pulled his Honda gas lawnmower out of the back of his pickup truck in the parking lot of the Second Congregational Church on Conant Street.

Terrill has been an active member of the church for over 25 years and lives less than a half-mile away. When people ask what he does at the church, his wife will say he’s “everything but the minister.”

On this occasion, Terrill, 70, who is chair of the church’s property committee, was taking it upon himself to mow the grass. But first he walked around back to pick up trash and do a little raking, leaving his lawnmower on the sidewalk out front.

You might be able to guess what happened next. If you’ve seen the sign out front of the church lately, you definitely know what happened. On Good Friday, no less.
